When We Listen.

“Thoughts come and go in the blink of an eye,” shares author and Headspace founder, Andy Puddicombe. “They cannot be touched and cannot be found. And yet we give them so much importance.”

I watched a young man spinning thoughtlessly out of control. The gas pump handle wouldn’t engage, and his little one was inside the car carrying on.

I watched as his energy slowly transformed. At first, with shoulders haunching painfully forward – and then, with head sunk in worry. All stemming from a mechanical upset and the inability to hush his child’s wincing.

The little one banged, crying to the window – as her father finally snapped under the pressure.

“What is so important that you can’t wait 5 more minutes?” he shouted.

“Daddy,” she said, with tears streaming down her reddened, flushed cheeks. “I just wanted to say I love you.”

And, just like that the mood was lifted. As if energy might have mass and weight. As if it were something palpable to be felt, not lessened. As if our thoughts were so terribly heavy that we couldn’t dare to lift them ourselves.

But, in reality they can neither be touched nor found. In fact, they are always quickly passing. It’s only when we latch on so tightly to those littler things that carry so much worry.

That’s when things get a little too ‘swirly’ – and, that’s when we feel the greatest burden.

In letting go, my dearest darlings – we make room for the love we so very much deserve.
