A Not-So-Common Bond.

Common…

To some, the word validates our distinction, forcing the construct of boundary where acceptance is needed.

While to others, it reinforces the depth of our connection; allowing diversity to serve the greater capacity of man.

Yet, which do we choose?

Do we limit ourselves through deliberation of cause? Or, do we allow ourselves the amplitude and scale of an unwavering light? Casting outward for the benefit of looking in?

The irony is that we are both separated and bound by these distinctions. Though, that which we share – the ‘common’, if you will – is infinitely more significant.

While each of us may walk a separate path, does the ground not welcome us equally? Are we not guided by the same warmth of sun? Do we not long for similar assurances?

We are unique, yes – though, this expression of our humanity is ultimately what binds. We are ‘made whole’ through the diversity of our not-so-common experiences.

We Are What We Experience.

My darlings, this morning I am inspired by the words of Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, who writes:

“An enlightened essence is present in everyone. It is present in every state, both samsara and nirvana, and in all sentient beings; there is no exception.”

His words have been present in my thoughts, as of late. In reading through messages, I sense the doubt and hesitation; the unwillingness to fully believe.

That we are already enlightened beings.

We are born into this space, unburdened by the complexities of judgment and ego. We see the world as it truly is, absent the limitations of label.

And, yet? Something holds us back, my loves – prohibiting our ability to experience our ‘Buddha nature’ within.

We see enlightenment as a goal, a destination. Though, ultimately – that which we seek is always within, waiting to be revealed.

“Awakening to enlightenment is not an ancient fable,” he shares. “It is not mythology. It actually does happen. Bring the oral instructions into your own practical experience and enlightenment is indeed possible; it is not just a fairy tale.”
Today, I invite you to explore these subtleties of self, to experience this world as a manifestation of your own Buddha nature. And, to ultimately know…that you are the world you discover.

In peace, my loves…

It’s the Experience Which Makes the Memory.

I knew a couple when the children were much younger. They were parents of another child in my daughters elementary school class. He, an engineer at a reputable firm and she, a ‘stay at home’ Mom.

Earlier on, I knew them only by way of the other parent’s ‘introduction’ – ” that annoying couple with all the crazy equipment.”

You see, they were always standing to the back of the auditorium during the children’s recitals and programs – inevitably with high tech cameras continuously rolling.

Their child grew up before the camera lens; the glint of her parents’ eye obscured from view.

“Why don’t you just sit down, enjoy the program and let the cameras roll,” I remember asking.

“Are you kidding,” he snipped. “And just what am I going to look back on when she’s grown?”

They were so concerned with missing it all, that they vowed to capture every moment on film. Yet, they never actually experienced the energy of the moment. Sadly, they lived vicariously through shutter stops and video lighting.

Years later, I learned there had been a terrible fire. “We lost everything,” he shook his head sadly.

I couldn’t even offer the consultation, “those objects are just things, the true meaning is in the memory.”

And though, perhaps, an extreme example – it does illustrate an important life lesson.

That is, to simply pay attention.

I’ve always believed that we’ve ‘gifted’ these senses to lend context to our being, to help us appreciate the subtleties of each glorious, new day.

For me, these memories are quite vivid. In any given moment, I can feel the stubble from my father’s cheek, or catch a hint of Mom’s “White Shoulder” still lingering in air. I can close my eyes, and hear the excited squeals of my little ones – racing fearlessly onward to embrace the adventure of day.

For me, these memories are never further than a single thought away – a moment of silence graciously carrying them ‘home.’

You see, there are just some things that cannot be captured to film. There are just some things that must be experienced fully.

It’s the experience that makes the memory, my loves – everything else is secondary.
