Happiness

Within This Connection.

A young man approached me by the sidewalk today. “You have a lovely smile,” he said. “And, as you know, a smile is God’s gift.”

I’ve always prided myself on an aspect of connection; one that extends beyond the words so graciously tendered and into a space of shared understanding.

Though often we struggle with our limitations, our boundaries. We’re terrified to lose that sense of ‘me’ within the ‘us’.

Whether through the burden of past hurt, or the sting of an irreconcilable grievance — still we stand eager to know this heart which extends itself to us.

Though, often through the simplicity of smile – where words fail to express ‘God’s gift’.

We are together, yet desperately lonely; our souls fixed to these invisible threads.

“Love is our true destiny,” shares Thomas Merton. “We do not find the meaning of life ourselves alone – we find it with another.”

And, beginning within the soft glow of smile.

The Beginning of New.

Jiddu Krishnamurti once wrote that in order to understand the immeasurable the mind must be extraordinarily still. That it must reach beyond this sanctity of knowing, opening to a space where security ends.

In this way, we may begin to understand the failure of these attempts, to know the entirety of world through diminished lens.

“It is only when the mind is free from the old,” he shared. “that it meets everything anew, and in that there is joy.”

Though this discursiveness of mind, it never ends; it bends, it weaves through borrowed chance. Chasing endlessly that which humbly receives – a willingness of heart and a oneness of dream.

We are seekers of a truth that liberates belief.

On this day, my loves – I’m wishing you…the ending of sorrow, and the beginning of new.

In peace…

Where Do We Find Our Joy?

If all we have is now, my loves – then, tell me…where is joy realized?

Is it maintained within the burden of past; the lingering of hurt within the sting? Does it lay, helpless – vanquished by the promise of tomorrow, and the lessening of hope within?

Or, is it right here before our eyes? In this moment, right now? Displaced only by the energy of wanting, and the necessity to ‘get it all right’?

The truth is, though we all wish to be ‘be’ happy – very few know the path to realize joy. Our minds are continuously racing, failing at our attempts to calculate the ‘steps’ from suffering to bliss. We lose ourselves in the process of doing; we fail to understand the blessing gifted.

As a result, this present moment becomes nothing more than a means to an end; a catalyst to an unyielding sorrow.

“If only…”

Oh, my darlings – how often have we uttered these words; hopeful for a simple change of condition, a relief through Fate’s gracious hand?

Strive, strive, strive…do, do, do…with never a moment to rest.

If only we might recognize the treasure before us, waiting like gold beneath our feet.

My darlings, if all we have is now – then, tell me… where does joy our manifest?

A little something to consider, my friends…

In peace…

What is Your Purpose?

What is the purpose of this life, my loves?

More specifically, what is the purpose of your life in the context of this much greater whole?

The first of the two questions is by far the easiest to answer. Though, the second –ah, that’s where we often struggle.

Why?

Because, each day serves as testimony to our continual life’s journey. We are born, and we awaken each day — newly formed. The shadows of night lifted only by sun.

Within the catalyst of changing season, we find our own self reflected — knowing even the most barren of branch hold the promise of bud.

In this life, we are both the promise and the potential; our ‘reality’ a composite of the choices once made.

“I have been and still am a seeker,” shares author, Herman Hesse. “But I have ceased to question stars and books; I have begun to listen to the teaching my blood whispers to me.”

So, then – what is the purpose of this life…your life, my darlings?

For me? It is to seek and then to share all vestiges of love.

The Art of ‘Bend and Flex’.

“I need to meditate…”

The thought was nearly inescapable, as I sat with mug cupped firmly in hand — tendrils of mist rising to engage. It was a gift from a friend, now soothing to hand — it’s warmth reassuring to these rigors of day.

The stiffness was quite sharp this morning, as I challenged my hand to bend, to flex…anything to ease.

It struck me as quite ironic – what we’ll do for body, though less often for soul. Is it a matter of more telling pain? Or, are we finding that one is easier to soothe?

Though, shouldn’t they be equally viewed?

“Bend, flex…”

As the morning ushered in – I stretched and took another sip; the ‘flavors’ are always better that second time around.

Body and mind, my darlings – and, always in equally loving proportion.

Zen and the Art of Puppy-Knowing.

The house was quite still this morning, save for the scurrying of a restless little pup.

I watched as he attempted to make bedding of couch pillows — digging, twisting and contorting his was only through to deeper vexation. With labored sigh, he leapt from the edge — his fate resigned to an unforgiving ground.

He paced urgently until finally he found it; there amongst a sea of table legs and linoleum — a single patch of unimpeded sun.

Rainer Maria Rilke to the simplicity of the ‘hardly noticeable’ — within which we’d find an immeasurable greatness. To a dog, the prospect is nearly effortless – “does this bring me joy?”

As children, we measure greatness in terms of a “THIS MUCH” wingspan. Though sadly, as we age we learn a different scale; altered merely through the path of definition.

Until a slumbering pup teaches us ‘more’…

A True and Boundless Joy.

I believe it was Shantideva who once observed, that all the joy within this world comes from wishing others to be happy. Whereas, suffering manifests in the space of wishing our own.

When I was a young mother, I wished only for my children’s happiness and well-being. I’d pray often from early day until night, “Please God, help me fill their lives with joy.”

Truth be told, I’d never known such a selfless desire; wanting for others in place of my own. At times, the energy was nearly overwhelming. Though, when they’d smile, my heart would swell — gifting an unbridled joy unlike any other I’d known.

Likewise, it shared perhaps my greatest life lesson. That is, the path to true joy is forged in service to others.

I pray we may all know the distinction between.

In peace…

How Do We Know That We Are Loved?

How do we know that we are loved, my darlings?

Is it not realized within this fullness of breath? As we begin to understand and know the true blessing of a resilience born inside the frailty of our own human existence?

And, as our feet touch the softness of this earth, do we not feel it within each and every step?

So often we feel alone, my loves. We question our connection to all those around us, and the value we lend in return. We become preoccupied and distracted by the formalities of day, losing ourselves in a schedule-driven pacing. In doing so, we fail to appreciate our intrinsic connection to the wonders of life which enrich us.

Simply said, we forget what it means to be alive.

I think love is life, my darlings; the means by which we may begin to widen the aperture by which humanity perceives itself.

We can begin to heal the wounds of this world.

“We have the Earth and the whole cosmos within us.” shares Thich Nhat Hanh. “We are made of the sun. We are made of stars. Touching the true nature of reality, we can transcend the dualistic view that the cosmos is something greater than ourselves or different from ourselves.”

Oh, my darlings, can’t you see…?

You don’t have to feel love; you ARE love.

The Heart of Hiraeth.

I happened upon a most beautiful word the other day. As a writer, you can imagine my excitement upon this magnificent discovery.

The word is “hiraeth” – a Welsh word, whose meaning is elusive in many different languages. Though, for many of us here – we instinctively know.

Often translated as an intense longing, though, in reality – its meaning is far more complex. As, it incorporates a much deeper spiritual aspect.

To feel hiraeth is to experience a sense of incompleteness…a profound yearning born from the very recesses of our soul.

Something, we’ve all experienced – I know.

Close your eyes and feel it with me – think of those far off places that have yet to be explored. The dreamer in you is calling – at first a whisper, a gentle urge…until that ‘call’ is all that can be heard.

My darlings, we are all born with this yearning within – driving us forward, and into those places we most fear.

It wakes us from our darkest sleep, pulls back those sheers and lets our heart awaken.

It’s hiraeth which beckons our soul to come ‘home’ ~ and, today my darlings, hiraeth is the word I love most of all ~

“Hiraeth beckons with wordless call,
Hear, my soul, with heart enthrall’d.
Hiraeth whispers while earth I roam;
Here I wait the call “come home.”

Like seagull cry, like sea borne wind,
That speak with words beyond my ken,
A longing deep with words unsaid,
Calls a wanderer home instead.

I heed your call, Hiraeth, I come
On westward path to hearth and home.
My path leads on to western shore,
My heart tells me there is yet more.

Within my ears the sea air sighs;
The sunset glow, it fills my eyes.
I stand at edge of sea and earth,
My bare feet washed in gentle surf.

Hiraeth’s longing to call me on,
Here, on shore, in setting sun.
Hiraeth calls past sunset fire,
“Look beyond, come far higher!” – Unknown

That Which Forces the Lotus’ Bloom.

An American journalist who had been following Gandhi’s work for years, once asked, “Can you tell me the secret of your life in three words?”

Not being able to resist the challenge, Gandhi smiled and offered, “Yes…Renounce and enjoy!”

Such a simple proposition, yes? And, yet? How often do we allow ourselves to get whisked away, our minds falling into that precipice of ‘wishing to leave it all behind’?

We struggle within our day to day. Whether by way of self-imposed tasking, or more simply — traffic that’s never ending, one thing is clear:

My goodness, we need a break.

And so, we sit upon our ‘meditation cushion’ — wondering why our lives seem never changing.

It brought to mind Thich Nhat Hanh’s training on mindful consumption:

“Many of us think that happiness comes from consuming something, from bringing something from outside into us, but in fact, happiness comes from inside. When we can remove the materials of anger, violence, hatred, and despair from our souls, then happiness will open like a lotus flower, or like a rose. The happiness of a flower does not come from outside, the happiness of a flower comes from inside the flower, and our happiness is the same.”

So often we think of happiness as an external condition. That is to say, ‘if only’ we could change just this one thing – then, we could truly be happy.

But, happiness is never external to self, my friends — rather, it is a mind state which nourishes the soul. When we are able to interact mindfully with our surroundings, to create the conditions by which we may manifest positive intentions throughout –my darlings, that is when we will finally know the energy of a true and lasting peace.

Though, in order to nurture these roots of happiness, to find clarity of purpose — we must be willing to let it all go. To relinquish those things which keep us so foolishly tethered.

“The Buddha said that it’s greed, not anger, that keeps us on the wheel.” shares Tenzin Palmo. “Nobody’s chaining us down: we’re clinging on with both hands…We have to cultivate contentment with what we have. We really don’t need much. When you know this, the mind settles down. Cultivate generosity. Delight in giving. Learn to live lightly. In this way, we can begin to transform what is negative into what is positive.”

My darlings, this is how we learn to grow. Much like the Lotus flower, our happiness is formed from within.

A little something to consider on this day, my friends ~ a reflection on that which forces the Lotus’ bloom.
